Choices: The Power That Shapes Our Lives
Choices. The one thing that possesses so much power that it can turn everything and anything into something else. It is strong enough to turn our day the other way around. They can tear our world apart, shatter us into pieces, and whatnot. Yet, the choices we make—whether on our own or influenced by someone else—divert our attention to all the different choices we could have made, making us wonder: What if?
The Never-Ending “What If” Loop
How do we escape this whole what if scenario? Ideally, I have no real idea to get away from it, so I am kind of just trying to work on it. Many times in a day, I question myself: What could have happened if I had chosen the other road? What if I had walked on “The Road Not Taken”?
Human behavior is such that it keeps revisiting and re-evaluating past choices, even when we desperately want to move forward. It’s a costly affair because when we visit those memories, they cut through us, making us wonder again and again: What if?
The Mocking Error in Our Thought Process
This what if is a mocking error, an endless loop in our minds that keeps us trapped. It makes us question not just our choices but also our thought processes, our courage, and our ability to take risks. We overanalyze decisions that have already been made, searching for an alternate reality that does not exist.
But should we really let our past choices haunt us?
Breaking Free from the “What If” Trap
While we can never fully escape the what if thoughts, we can learn to manage them. Here’s how:
-
Acceptance – Acknowledge that every choice, good or bad, is part of your journey. Regret will not change the past.
-
Learn from It – Instead of dwelling on what could have been, focus on what you can learn and apply in the future.
-
Be Present – Shift your focus from the past to the present. The best thing you can do is make the most of the moment you’re in right now.
-
Trust Yourself – At the time of making a choice, you did what felt right. Trust yourself and your instincts.
-
Let Go – Holding on to what if thoughts drains mental energy. Let go and move forward.
Life is a series of choices. Some will turn out great, some will leave us wondering. But in the end, it’s the choices we embrace, not regret, that truly shape us.
So, next time what if sneaks into your thoughts, remind yourself: The choice has been made. Now, it’s time to move forward.
